Thank you for your interest in our program. Cornerstone has three volunteer opportunities – (1) Tutoring, a direct service commitment for a school year from October to May, and, (2) Gift-wrapping fundraiser in December, and (3) serving on the governing Board, Associate Board, or a committee.
Our goal is to help young people improve their skills in reading, writing, and math, so that they have more opportunities for a fulfilling life. We rely on our volunteer tutors to help our student body to achieve these goals.
Each volunteer is matched with one middle or high school student for weekly 90-minute sessions, meeting with the same student each week. Our tutoring term is from October to May on Monday or Wednesday afternoons at the Lincoln Center campus of Fordham University or Community Action School, a local public middle school in the Upper West Side. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old.
Tutors receive group and individual training before starting their sessions, and can always get extra advice and assistance, with many kinds of materials available. Cornerstone professional staff is at the tutoring sites.
Tutoring makes a difference in the lives of everyone involved.

Every year in December, Cornerstone unites with Barnes & Noble in their gift-wrapping event. We recruit volunteers starting in November to assist us with gift-wrapping at a store located in the Upper West Side, NYC. We welcome all to join us during the holiday season. Cornerstone uses this platform to spread the word about our organization and our mission in the community. This is a fund-raising and fun event.

Cornerstone has a governing BOARD OF DIRECTORS, a requirement for all corporations. This Board’s role is the overall management of the organization, ensuring that our legal and financial responsibilities are met, including raising sufficient funds to operate. This is a diverse volunteer Board that commits its time, talents, expertise, contacts, finances, and energy to Cornerstone’s well-being. There is a process for joining the Board that includes interviews with Board members and the executive director prior to being considered for election to this group. A Board member needs to be committed to our mission and willing to make a long-term commitment to our organization.
The ASSOCIATE BOARD is composed of younger adults who are committed to our mission and work and want to help us to grow, but who cannot yet make the larger commitments needed for the governing Board. Currently the Associate Board has periodic meetings during the year, primarily to plan and run several small and fun fund-raising events. In 2008 and 2009 the Associate Board sponsored a Halloween party and a harbor cruise.
Both Boards have COMMITTEES to help them carry out the assortment of projects that sustain our work. Committees are composed of Board members and non-Board members who are able to lend assistance with their specific area of expertise or for a specified period of time.
