Volunteering in New York SUMMER DAY CAMP

Our educationally oriented camp is busy for five weeks each summer and has a dual focus— learning and fun.

Cornerstone's camp serves adolescents entering 6th grade through those leaving 8th grade. We provide a strong academic program combined with the fun, adventure and learning of a city day camp.

The basics of our camp are:
  • 36 youngsters divided into class groupings, by grade, of 12 students.
  • 50-minute classes in Reading, Writing, and Math each Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday morning, taught by professional teachers.
  • Arts classes twice weekly with a finished product at camp end.
  • Full-day and half-day trips within the city.
  • Teacher-prepared beginning and ending tests to determine progress made, homework and report cards.
Staffing consists of three teachers who are responsible for the academic and arts classes, three senior counselors who lead the afternoon program of play and trips, five summer youth employees who are junior counselors and office assistants, and the two full-time staff of Cornerstone.

The small class size enables each camper to get individual attention and assistance with particular needs. Reading classes include animated discussions on the book or play, as we concentrate on an understanding of what is read. Writing classes have a project each year on a particular kind of writing, allowing campers to understand and master different techniques, such as, letter writing or opinion and analysis. Math classes review the many elements needed for success including memorized information (times tables, 12" = 1', definitions, etc.), computation and problem solving.

In 2005 our campers reported the following:
