Tutoring Bridge Summer Camp |
BRIDGE PROGRAM
Bridge started in school-year 2002-2003 as an expansion program to serve our students as they entered high school. Cornerstone students can now continue throughout high school in this program that is a weekly discussion group. Teens may participate in One-To-One Tutoring if they wish. Our Program Coordinator, Shirake LaFond, and our Public Ally, Himani Sharma, lead this component. Discussion topics center around several themes: Relationships - with friends, parents, teachers, non-friends, love interests, Health - nutrition, exercise, tobacco, alcohol, drugs, sex, School - high school needs, college requirements, kinds of higher education, Work - job applications, interview skills, resume preparation, job behavior codes and demeanor, long-term careers, and other topics. A highlight of this program each year is the college tour. In school-year 2004, a small group spent 4 days visiting colleges in Baltimore and Washington, D.C. Most years we join with a larger group and visit historically Black colleges and universities in from Pennsylvania to Georgia. Our young people returned with renewed zeal for learning. "The College Trip Tour this year was one of the most interesting, fun, and knowledgeable weeks of my life. Cornerstone made me the writer that I am today and a person that was taught to stand tall." Danny, 9th
